Happy April! April means “to open”, and as the month lands in the middle of Spring we’re starting to notice more buds in bloom, bulbs planted in the yard are peeking up their heads, and open windows are beginning to let in fresh cool air. Our bodies are starting to awaken, turning our faces toward the extra bits of daylight and stretching out winter’s dust. Maybe you’ve been Marie Kondo-ing some closets or have been getting outside more. As we move into a new month, may we feel the courage to open. To breathe. To let our hearts start to feel wider, mirroring the flowers on the trees.
In 2019, we are exploring the yoga sutras. Yoga sutras are short phrases that create the philosophy of yoga. They offer wisdom and guidelines for living a meaningful and purposeful life. The sutra for April is 1.13 – The effort towards steadiness of the mind is practice.
Yoga is often referred to as yoga practice rather than yoga class. This phrasing is gentle and subconsciously reminds us that every day is different. Some days the body feels open and flexible, some days it feels stiff and sore. The mind is the same. Some moments the mind feels busy, racing from one thought to the next, jumping into the future or ruminating on the past. And some moments the mind is calm, like the water of the lake early in the morning, gliding through at peace. I think we all long for more moments of quiet lake mind…I know I do. With sutra 1.13, we are reminded that steadiness, softness, gentleness in the mind takes practice. And like our moms always used to tell us…anything worth doing requires practice. When we show up on our yoga mats, however we show up, fluctuating and racing, open, closed, or somewhere in between, the effort is done. We’ve shown up. Then the practice begins. Moment by moment, breath by breath. Maybe steadiness looks like pushing through a Fitness class so focused on the body the mind has no choice but to slow down. Or maybe steadiness looks like sitting with the thoughts quietly in Unwind, allowing whatever is happening to happen. Like the flowers in spring, we don’t become fully open all at once. Our beauty is quietly there, ready to be revealed one steady step, one effort of practice at a time.

Sunday April 7th from 2-4:30pm
Meditation is a practice that promotes relaxation, presence, and overall well-being. An ancient tool that has been used for thousands of years to encourage inner peace, meditation is also a remedy for modern life and a way to find more space and ease in your day to day. This workshop will discuss the roots and philosophy behind meditation, as well as the science that is supporting its use for mental and physical vitality. We will move through a restorative practice to support comfort in the meditation, and discuss ways to weave meditation into your daily life. Grounding: A Yoga Experience
Saturday April 13th from 1-2:30pm
Join Yoga teacher Tessa Murray and singer songwriter Nicole Holkestad for a 90-minute practice. Throughout the class Nicole will play original songs and covers while we focus on hips and forward folds. As we transition into spring it important to have a clear vision of what you want to cultivate and manifest. Through focusing on forward folds, we move our attention inward and opening the hips creates space in the body and opportunity to let go of any limitations that hold us back. When we create and design our space, both internal and external, we don’t need to rely on sheer will power to make change. This introspective class will offer the environment to dissolve expectations and limitations leaving you feeling at ease body, mind, and spirit. Investment is $30. Space is limited. Book now on MindBody or in studio.
