It’s officially summer and we couldn’t be more excited! The sun streaming brightly through the windows of the studio, taking our coffee to the rooftop, walking along the lake downtown after class…these are a few of our favourite June moments.
Studio 3 has the most beautiful view of the lake framed by tall trees that change with each season. Right now, they are full and bright green, reminding us to stretch our limbs wide and point our faces toward the sky.
This year we are exploring the yoga sutras. Sutras are short phrases that provide the philosophical background for the teachings of yoga and offer wisdom and guidance for a life well-lived.
The sutra for June is Sutra 2.1 - Yoga in action is self-discipline, self-inquiry, and faith. This sutra recognizes the connection of the mind, body, and spirit. Self-discipline in Sanskrit (the original language of the sutras) is tapas. Tapas means energy or fire. This is the place from where we create the momentum to get done what we need to get done in our lives, even when we don’t want to. It could be sitting down to work through a full email inbox or training for a 5K. Self-discipline is how we get our goals accomplished. Self-inquiry is going in, becoming comfortable with our thoughts and feelings. Why do we want what we want in life? How to we feel about it? What do we tell ourselves about who we are and how we will get there? Yoga helps create space to ask these inner questions and become comfortable with the answers. Faith is the belief in the ability to get there. In life. In our sense of self. Believing that who we are is enough, that we are needed and connected…to each other, to the universe, to something bigger than ourselves.
The beautiful thing about the sutras is they can create and make meaning for each person. The way I apply it to and make sense of it in my life may be very different than the person next to me. Or perhaps one day I need to lean into self-discipline, while the next I need a little more faith. The action of yoga - being on the mat, moving the body, connecting the mind, breath, heart – opens space to discover self and create a life well lived. Each moment. Each day.
Yoga in Action
Try a class you have never tried before - change up your routine - get out of your comfort zone! June 10th – June 15th we are offering an awesome yoga challenge. You have one week to come to 1 Foundations, 1 Fitness, and 1 Unwind class. Attend your favourites, try something new. We are so excited to announce the start of Rooftop Yoga! Fresh air, panoramic views of lake Okanagan, and you! Join us every Monday and Wednesday at 7:30 am and every Friday at 6:30am for a 60-minute all-levels yoga class on the 7th floor rooftop of the Innovation Centre. Classes start Monday June 17th. Space is limited, sign up online to ensure your spot.

Monday July 1st – 9:15am Rooftop Yoga (all levels) and 10:30am Foundations ONLY
Twists and Backbends: a Heart Opening Yoga Practice
Join Tessa Murray on July 10th from 5:30-7:30pm for a special twist and backbends class. This 2-hour practice will lead you through a vinyasa flow to open and prepare the body physically and energetically to open the heart. With the intention of opening our heart centre, the space we practice in will become a safe, sacred container. You will be guided through a tension melting flow to warm and create space in the body, so you fully experience what you can receive when your heart is open. The practice will close with restorative postures and meditation. Investment is $35 per person. Space is limited, book your spot online or in studio.
